Southern California University
Clinic of Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture
Southern
California University Clinic of Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture
is a modern, professional teaching clinic where interns work under
the supervision of experienced California licensed Acupuncturists.
The primary objective of the clinic is to provide effective, low-cost
treatment for a wide variety of ailments using acupuncture and
other healing modalities of Oriental Medicine.
SCUSOMA Clinic is a community-oriented teaching clinic established
to provide SCUSOMA students with a professional setting in which
to complete their internship requirements for the Master of Oriental
Medicine & Acupuncture. Each intern is closely supervised
by a highly educated and skilled acupuncturist.
To further enhance the benefits of the treatment process, Interns
may choose from a myriad of treatment modalities. Theses include
the use of acupuncture needles, herbal supplements, cupping, moxibustion,
electro acupuncture, Tui Na massage, nutritional counseling, and
acupressure. SCUSOMA is able to offer our patients access to an
extensive range of advanced treatments.
Each clinic contains modern, treatment rooms that are designed
to accommodate from one to three patients at a time. This variation
in room accommodation allows for research with controlled group
studies. Each clinic also contains a fully stocked pharmacy containing
over 400 raw herbs of the finest quality, a decoction room for
cooking herbal formulas, and a well-stocked encapsulated herbal
pharmacy.
In addition to their medical training, SCUSOMA students are instructed
to live and conduct themselves in ways that exemplify the integrity
of our healing tradition.
About Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture
Oriental Medicine & Acupuncture is a complete system of healing
which has proven its effectiveness in eastern Asia for over 4000
years. While it has only recently reached Europe and North America,
it has already gained considerable recognition in the western
world. In the United States, Oriental Medicine is recognized not
only for curing existing conditions, but for preventing the onset
of disease and life-threatening illnesses.
ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a medical modality that has been used to diagnose,
treat and prevent illness for over 2000 years. Acupuncture can
remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative
powers, and strengthen the immune system. In Oriental Medicine
assessment your practitioner will diagnose, or differentiate,
your condition with a thorough examination which will include
an interpretation through medical history, pulse, and tongue diagnosis.
Your practitioner may also use the following adjunct techniques
within your session: Moxibustion (heat), Gua Sha (scraping), Cupping
(suction), auricular therapy (ear acupuncture), electrical or
laser stimulation, or even manual manipulation of the points.
There are many different styles of acupuncture including: Chinese,
Japanese, Korean and Tibetan.
CUPPING
This modality involves the use of glass globes to apply vacuum
suction to the skin. It increases blood circulation and heightens
the flow of Qi. Cupping is useful for muscle injury, joint pain,
headaches, and acute bronchial congestion.
MOXIBUSTION
Moxibustion applies focused heat from a slow-burning herb over
acupuncture points to stimulate the flow of Qi. It may be used
to relieve traumatic pain or alleviate debilitating conditions
such as weakness and fatigue. Moxibustion is also quite effective
for gynecological problems.
HERBOLOGY
For thousands of years, Oriental Medicine practitioners have
known of and employed a vast array of herbs with medicinal properties.
Western Pharmacology is now beginning to acknowledge these natural
counterparts without the side effects of processed pharmaceuticals.
In Oriental Medicine, herbs are almost always prescribed in conjunction
with acupuncture and other treatments. They are extremely effective
in unblocking the flow of Qi and fortifying the internal organs.
Herbal formulas are specifically designed for the individual needs
of the patient. It is unlikely that two patients, even with the
same diagnosis, will receive the same herbal prescription.
