DESCRIPTION OF CLINICAL TRAINING COURSES

CL 400 HERBAL PHARMACY (6units/ 60 hours)
Supervised practical experience in herbal pharmacy, selecting, weighing and compounding herbal prescriptions.
Prerequisite: AC 410; AC 412; HB 402; HB 404; HB 406; HB 408; OM 404; OM 406; OM 408; OM 410; OM 412

CL 402; CL 404; CL 406 CLINIC OBSERVATION I – III (18 units/ 180 hours)
The first stage of training courses for interns. Three consecutive 60-hour courses make 9 units of 180 hours required courses. At the end of these three courses, the students must pass the Level I Clinic Examination with a minimum score of 70 % to take the next stage of training courses for interns. Only those students who mastered 1) basic Western physical examination techniques such as measuring blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and breath; 2) identification and preparation of herbs based on the prescriptions, successful CPR performance, and Clean Needle Technique instruction, knowledge about clinic and pharmacy regulations and maintaining appropriate demeanor as an Oriental health care provider can pass the courses.

CL 408 CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION I (Lab) (2units/20 hours)
Students are supposed to present patient cases they observed from their clinic experiences and address any difficulties in diagnosis, treatment, or other clinical issues.
Prerequisite: CL 402; CL 404; CL 406

CL 410; CL 412 DIAGNOSIS AND EVALUATION I & II (12 units/ 120hours)
The second stage of training courses for interns. Under supervising by clinical supervisors, interns begin to be involved in diagnosis, evaluation, and herbal prescriptions based on the diagnosis. Interns’ diagnosis, evaluation, and herbal prescriptions will be reviewed by the clinical supervisors and become subjects for discussions. During these courses, students must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of herbs and major herbal formulas, understanding major acupuncture points, and their safe use in treatment, increased practice and competency in CPR and Clean Needle Technique. Students must pass the Level II Clinic Examination by scoring a minimum 70 %.

CL 414 CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION II (Lab) (2 units/ 20hours)
Presentation and discussion of cases attended by interns. Each student must present at least one case in writing for instructor’s review with thorough analysis and conclusion.
Prerequisite: CL 410; CL 412

CL 416; CL 418 DIAGNOSIS AND EVALUATION III & IV (12 units/120 hours)
Continuation of CL 410 and 412.
Prerequisite: CL 410 & 412

CL 420 CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION III (Lab) (2 units/20 hours)
Presentation and discussion of cases attended by interns. Each student must present at least one case in writing for instructor’s review with thorough analysis and conclusion.
Prerequisite: CL 414

CL 422; CL 424; CL 426 SUPERVISED PRACTICE I, II, III (30 units/ 300hours)
The final stage of an intern’s training conducted under the supervision of clinical supervisor. The intern is required to demonstrate a complete and thorough understanding of all elements of clinical diagnosis and treatment, including complete understanding of herbal formulas and their functions, competency in herbal prescriptions, expertness of CPR and Clean Needle Technique, expertness in diagnosis skills, competency in procedural matters such as charting, interviews with patients, practice management, etc.
Prerequisite: CL 420

CL 428 CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION IV (Lab) (2 units/ 20 hours)
Students continue to present cases from their clinical experiences through CL 422 and address any difficulties in diagnosis, treatment, or other clinical issues.
Prerequisite: CL420; CL 422

CL 430 CLINICAL CASE SEMINAR I (3 units/30 hours)
Presentation and discussion of cases attended by interns in CL 424. The interns are required to demonstrate their skills and knowledge professionally from patient intake, diagnosis, acupuncture treatment and herbal prescriptions. Ethical considerations will also be discussed in their presentations,. In addition, interns must be ready to present more sophisticated case studies and patient evaluations with deeper knowledge of herbal and acupuncture treatment. Students will present their own recommended treatment modalities and the instructor will evaluate them.
Prerequisite: CL 424, CL 428

CL 432 CLINICAL CASE SEMINAR II (3 units/30 hours)
Continuation of CL 430 for presentation and discussion of cases attended by interns in CL 426.
Prerequisite: CL 426, CL 430.
