HERBOLOGY

HB 400 BOTANY AND INTRODUCTION TO HERBOLOGY (3 units/ 30 hours)
An introduction to major plaints used in Oriental Medicine, including plant morphology, and the classification and basic properties of Chinese herbs.
Prerequisite: None

HB 402; 404; 406; 408 HERBOLOGY I - IV (12 units/ 120 hours)
A detailed study of approximately 450 Oriental herbs, their classification, name, taste, properties, entering channels, actions, and indications, contraindications and preparation.
Prerequisite (for all): HB 400

HB 402 HERBOLOGY I (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class will cover exterior releasing herbs, herbs relieving heat and toxicity, and downward draining herbs.

HB 404 HERBOLOGY II (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class will cover herbs that drain dampness, dispel wind dampness, transform dampness, relieve cold, relieve food stagnation, and expel parasites.

HB 406 HERBOLOGY III (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class will cover herbs used to regulate blood, transform phlegm, relieve coughing, calm mental spirit, and stop tremors.

HB 408 HERBOLOGY IV (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class will cover the herbs used to tonify Qi, Yin, Yang, blood, and external application.

HB 410 SURVEY OF HERBS (3 units/ 30 hours)
This course is a systematic review of the all herbs covered in Herbology I-IV. This class serves as a review course for the single herbs content of the Level 1 Clinical Exam.
Prerequisites: HB 402-408

HB 412; 414; 416; 418 HERB FORMULA I - IV (12units/ 120 hours)
A comprehensive introduction to Chinese herbal formulas for various clinical applications. The entire course consists of four parts. The course sequence also places special emphasis on the formulas required for the California Acupuncture License Examination.
Prerequisite: HB 410

HB 412 HERB FORMULA I (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class covers formulas used for diaphoretic, purgative, harmonizing, antipyretics and summer heat cleaning.

HB 414 HERB FORMULA II (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class covers formulas used for warming, exterior releasing, notifying, sedation, resuscitation, and astringents.

HB 416 HERB FORMULA III (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class covers formulas with carminative, blood regulating, anticonvulsant and moisturizing characteristics.

HB 418 HERB FORMULA IV (3 units/ 30 hours)
This class covers formulas with diuretic, phlegm expelling, resolving, anti-parasitic and anti-abscess characteristics.

HB 420 SURVEY OF HERB FORMULAS (3units/30 hours)
This course is a systematic review of the all herbs covered in Herb Formula I-IV. This class serves as a review course for the herbal formula content of the Level 3 Clinical Exam.
Prerequisites: HB 412-418

HB 422 ADVANCED HERB FORMULA (3units/30 hours)
Advanced study of herb formula. From clinical perspective, students will learn herbal prescriptions, which are used often as well as herbal prescriptions, which are effective for difficult treatments.
Prerequisite: HB 412; HB 414; HB 416, HB 418
