THEORY AND PRACTICE OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE

OM 400 INTRODUCTION TO TRADITIONAL ORIENTAL MEDICINE I (3units/30 hours)
A survey of the theory and practice of traditional Oriental diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Prerequisite: None

OM 402 INTRODUCTION TO ORIENTAL MEDICINE II (3units/ 30 hours) Continuation of OM 400.
An orientation to Chinese medicine and introduction to the concepts of yin and yang, 5 elements, basic substances, organ physiology, etiological factors, 8 principles.
Prerequisite: OM 400

OM 404 ORIENTAL MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (3units/ 30 hours)
An introduction to basic Oriental Medical terminology and Chinese characters useful in understanding acupuncture, herbology and Chinese medical theory.
Prerequisite: None

OM 406, 408, 410, 412 BASIC THEORY OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE I-IV (12units/ 120 hours)
A comprehensive introduction to Chinese medical theory. These classes offer in depth analysis of concepts such as yin and yang, 5 elements, basic substances, organ physiology, etiological factors, 8 principles and Zang/Fu theory. The entire series consists of four classes. These classes will also cover the history and philosophy of Oriental medicine.

OM 406 BASIC THEORY OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE I (3units/ 30 hours)
Prerequisite: OM 404

OM 408 BASIC THEORY OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE II (3units/ 30 hours)
Prerequisite: OM 404

OM 410 BASIC THEORY OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE III (3units/ 30 hours)
Prerequisite: OM 404

OM 412 BASIC THEORY OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE IV (3units/ 30 hours)
Prerequisite: OM 404

OM 414, 416, 418, 420 DIAGNOSIS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE I-IV (12units/ 120 hours)
A study of the four traditional methods of Oriental diagnosis, including observation, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry and palpation. Signs, symptoms, tongue analysis, and pulse analysis are also covered. The course also covers diagnosis based on channel and collateral theory, Six Channel theory, and Four level theories.
In depth study of signs, symptoms and syndromes according to Qi and Blood, Zang-Fu organs and combination organ syndromes, with special emphasis on appropriate herbal and acupuncture treatment modalities.
This course is designed to teach students how to distinguish various symptoms of diseases, their pathogenesis, etiology, and the creation of a treatment plan. The entire series consists of four classes.

OM 414 DIAGNOSIS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE I (3units/ 30 hours)

OM 416 DIAGNOSIS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE II (3units/ 30 hours)

OM 418 DIAGNOSIS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE III (3units/ 30 hours)

OM 420 DIAGNOSIS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE IV (3units/ 30 hours)

OM 422 HUANG DI NEI JING (3 units/30 hours)
An in depth study and interpretation of the “Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic”.
Prerequisite: At least one Chinese Internal Medicine course, one Acupuncture Therapeutics course, and one Herb Formula course.

OM 424 SHANG HAN LUN/WEN BING XUE I (3 units/30 hours)
The signs, symptoms and syndromes relating to the differentiation of disease according to the Shang Han Lun (Six Channel Differentiation), Wen Bing (Four Level Differentiation), and San Jiao Differentiation, with appropriate herbal and acupuncture treatment modalities.
Prerequisite: At least one Chinese Internal Medicine course, one Acupuncture Therapeutics course, and one Herb Formula course.

OM 426 SHANG HAN LUN/WEN BING XUE II (3 units/30 hours)
Continuation of OM 424. The signs, symptoms and syndromes relating to the differentiation of disease according to the Shang Han Lun (Six Channel Differentiation), Wen Bing (Four Level Differentiation), and San Jiao Differentiation, with appropriate herbal and acupuncture treatment modalities.
Prerequisite: At least one Oriental Internal Medicine course, one Acupuncture Therapeutics course, and one Herb Formula course.

OM 428 SURVEY OF SYNDROMES (3units/30 hours)
This class offers a systematic integration of Oriental medical theory with the full spectrum of Oriental diagnostic tools. This class forms the basis of the Oriental medical theory portion of the Level 2 Clinic Exam.
Prerequisite: OM 406, OM 408, OM 410, OM 412, OM 414, OM 416, OM 418, OM 420

OM 430 O.M. INTERNAL MEDICINE I (3units/ 30 hours)
Studies of disorders of the respiratory system, various types of pain and urinary disorders.
Prerequisite: OM 414, OM 416, OM 418, OM 420

OM 432 O.M. INTERNAL MEDICINE II (3units/ 30 hours)
Studies of disorders of the gastrointestinal system, neuromuscular system, genital system, and hemorrhaging.
Prerequisite: OM 430

OM 434 O.M. INTERNAL MEDICINE III (3units/ 30 hours)
Continuation of OM 432. Studies of disorders of the head, sleep, cardiovascular system, blood stagnation, tumors, and of psychology.
Prerequisite: OM 432

OM 436 O.M. INTERNAL MEDICINE IV (3units/30 hours)
Studies of disorders of the female reproductive system, and the studies of obstetrics according to Chinese medicine.
Prerequisite: OM 434

OM 438 O.M. GYNECOLOGY AND PEDIATRICS (3 units/30 hours)
Traditional Chinese gynecology studies the anatomy and physiology of females, the characteristics of pathology, and the laws of diagnosis and treatment of special female diseases. Anatomically, it reviews the organs and tissues of the uterus, cervix, birth canal, and external genitalia. Physiologically, it surveys the characteristics of menstruation, pregnancy, delivery and breast-feeding. Pathologically, it is concerned with disorders of menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, and other diseases specific to women. Together with women related diseases and problems, this course will also cover diseases and problems common to children.
Prerequisite: OM 414, OM 416, OM 418, OM 420

OM 440 ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS I (3 units/30 hours)
This class demonstrates highly advanced diagnosis techniques based on various clinical reports.
Prerequisite: OM 414, OM 416, OM 418, OM 420

OM 442 ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS II (3 units/30 hours)
Continuation of OM 440. The study and practice of more highly advanced diagnosis techniques based on various clinical reports.
Prerequisite: OM 414, OM 416, OM 418, OM 420

OM 444 CASE STUDIES I (3 units/30 hours)
Through the presentation and discussion of clinical cases students will be asked to make a diagnosis, an acupuncture treatment plan, and herbal prescription using patient files with the names erased. Ethical considerations will also be discussed.
Prerequisite: OM 430, OM 432, OM 434, OM 436

OM 446 CASE STUDIES II (3 units/30 hours)
Continuation of OM 444. Through the presentation and discussion of clinical cases students will be asked to make a diagnosis, an acupuncture treatment plan, and herbal prescription using patient files with the names erased.
Prerequisite: OM 430, OM 432, OM 434, OM 436

OM 448 CASE STUDIES III (3 units/30 hours)
Continuation of OM 446. Through the presentation and discussion of clinical cases students will be asked to make a diagnosis, an acupuncture treatment plan, and herbal prescription using patient files with the names erased.
Prerequisite: OM 430, OM 432, OM 434, OM 436
